Each year, the St George’s Cathedral Art Exhibition brings together the best of Western Australia’s young artistic talent, with entries from 60 schools across suburban and regional WA. The exhibition celebrates bold, original works from senior school students, who are invited to enter pieces across four categories: 2D, 3D, Digital, and Mixed Media & Textiles.
Unique to this event is its accessibility as schools can submit up to three works at no cost, ensuring a wide representation of creative voices across the state. The exhibition is proudly held in the historic St. George’s Cathedral, giving students the rare opportunity to showcase their art in such a significant and atmospheric setting.
Nikki submitted two artworks: a needle-felted piece and a ceramic plate, both appropriations of Vincent Van Gogh’s 1889 Masterpiece, Wheat Field With Cypresses. To see her works displayed in the grandeur of the Cathedral, illuminated by the stained glass light was both memorable and inspiring.

Artist Description
“My two pieces are appropriations of Van Gogh’s artwork, ‘Wheat Field With Cypresses’ (1889), painted during his time in a mental asylum. The tactile nature of clay and needle felting reflects the complexity of mental health struggles. In my work, the cypress tree represents the quiet strength that persists amidst the uncertainty and chaos – the swirling wind – of the human soul.” – Nikki Susanto
Winning her category has motivated Nikki to continue exploring new artistic mediums and to develop her skills further during her journey here at Kennedy.
We are incredibly proud of Nikki’s achievement and celebrate her well-deserved recognition at one of WA’s most prestigious school art competitions.

Congratulations, Nikki!
