Year 9 Chinese Cultural Excursion

On a chilly, raining day, heading into Perth city might not seem appealing. However, our Year 9 Chinese students proved that adventure and cultural experiences go on regardless of weather as they embarked on a vibrant excursion to Northbridge.

During their visit, they engaged in authentic, place-based learning experiences that fostered meaningful communication and cultural exchange. Using smart technologies, they explored historical significance of various local spots, deepening their understanding of Chinese culture.

Despite the gloomy weather, their enthusiasm remained high—especially when they enjoyed a delicious dim sum lunch, sipped on milk tea and explored a Chinese grocery store.

One student Luke Tarrant shared:

‘The excursion was great. I loved going to the restaurant and walking around Perth with my friends. This excursion helped me learn things about the Chinese culture like how to better use chopsticks and what Chinese shops looked like. It also helped with my understanding of the language because we sometimes had to look for specific Chinese characters to fill in the online quiz. Thank you for taking us.’

Rafael Widjaja expressed his enjoyment too:

I really enjoyed socialising with friends and, of course, the food! I also found the places we visited really interesting and engaging.
The excursion helped me better understand Chinese culture – especially the hospitality shown to guests and the stories of Chinese immigrants in Australia. I think experiencing it all in person made me feel more connected and immersed in the culture than I would’ve been in a classroom setting.
I’m really glad I went on the excursion. It would’ve been even better without the rain, but overall it was a great experience!

Similarly, Kenzie Lim reflected, ‘Seeing the Chinese gate and tasting the dim sum really helped me understand and connect to my cultural roots.’

Sophie Liu summed up the mix weather experience: ‘Although the rain dampened some parts of the trip, it gave us a sneak peek of what next year’s China tour might be like. Shopping, boba Tea and tasty lunch were highlights. It was a great experience for the whole class, and we thank Mr New for this experience. ‘

Anastasia Chan also shared her thoughts: ‘The rain did affect the first part of the trip, but having dim sum with friends and singing karaoke in the T4 shop made up for it. Despite getting a bit soaked and some library troubles, it was a worthwhile and fun filled day. Thanks, Mr New.’

We look forward to more adventures that help students immerse themselves in different languages and cultures. These excursions here at Kennedy Baptist College are a fantastic way to engage across different learning areas and inspire to grow in academically and personally.
