Transition to Kennedy

We understand that moving from primary to secondary school is a big change. At Kennedy, we are committed to ensuring your child experiences a smooth and welcoming transition. The information on this page will help you navigate this journey.

Year 7 Transition Program

Kennedy’s Year 7 Transition Program begins many months before their first day at the College.

Orientation Day

When your child is in Year 6, you will be invited to an Orientation Day in Term 4 of that year where they will get to meet their Year 11 Mentors. These mentors will support students to learn more about the College and give them strategies and skills to manage life at secondary school.

Parent Information Morning

This takes place on the same day of your child’s Orientation Day, where parents are invited to a morning tea followed by an information session to learn specific information about transition from our Principal and Head of Year 7, meet other Year 7 parents and to clarify information. This is the start of Kennedy’s Year 7 Transition Program.

In your child’s entry year, the following key events take place:

  • Pre-start Day in January
  • Commencement Ceremony on their first day of the school year
  • Year 7 Families Afternoon Tea

Activities and events are held throughout the year to support students in building organisational and study skills, connecting with peers and enhancing resilience and mindfulness. Extracurricular activities are also a great opportunity for your child to make new friends and pursue personal excellence.

The Year Prior to Entry

The Kennedy Extension and Enrichment Program (KEEP) provides an environment where academically able students can be challenged and extended to attain the highest levels of excellence, alongside peers who share similar aspirations, abilities and interests.

Students enrolled for Year 7 can apply for KEEP. Selection is based on testing conducted during the year preceding entry to Year 7. Families are invited for the testing which normally take place in May and will be notified via email if your child has been selected.
