Term 2 was full of flavour, discovery and cultural learning in the Chinese classroom. Students extended their understanding of Chinese language and traditions through hands-on activities, authentic experiences and community connections.
Our Year 8 Chinese students embraced the art of dumpling making, learning about this much-loved tradition while developing their teamwork and culinary skills. Year 10 students celebrated their learning through a Chinese Dinner, where they enjoyed traditional dishes and experienced the importance of food in bringing people together.
Our Year 9 students took their learning beyond the classroom with an immersive cultural excursion to Northbridge. Working in teams, students explored the local Chinese community, completed language and culture-based challenges and practiced authentic communication in real-world settings. The experience concluded with a traditional dim sum meal at a local Chinese restaurant, allowing students to connect their classroom learning with the wider community.
Students also celebrated the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Festival), an ancient Chinese tradition with more than 2,000 years of history. Through creative classroom activities, students explored the story of patriotic poet Qu Yuan, the significance of dragon boat races, and traditional foods such as zongzi. These activities encouraged students to deepen their intercultural understanding while celebrating the richness of Chinese culture.
Through food, language and cultural experiences, our Chinese language elective continues to provide students with meaningful opportunities to learn, connect and appreciate the diverse traditions that shape our world.
