Kennedy Baptist College’s great heritage was on show during our 30 Year Celebrations on Saturday 17 August. We welcomed Alumni, staff and families from both Kennedy our forerunner Colleges, Winthrop and Somerville, and honoured their contributions to our shared mission of educational excellence in a Christian context.
Alongside presentations in our Auditorium’s theatre, A Q&A led by Principal of Kennedy, Mr Mark Ashby, held some fascinating insights and hilarious stories, as the inaugural Principals of Winthrop, Mr Mike Smith, and Somerville, Miss Tracy Holmes, reflected on the obstacles and successes of each College, including the difficulty of running a school not connected to the electricity grid, as Winthrop experienced in their first years, to the short turnaround from vision to inception when establishing Somerville. For Mr Ashby, the greatest challenge at Kennedy was bringing two bold and distinct cultures together, as well as the physical bridging of the divide between the Colleges with new buildings and pathways.
Those who were unable to make it to these celebrations can now watch back the event by clicking here.
After the presentation, our community gathered in the Lower Foyer for a morning tea and to explore memorabilia from the Colleges – and even some old school photos! There were great conversations with old friends, students and teachers, as they discovered how the Colleges have enabled lifelong learning and growth. With no time limit set on the occasion, these members of our extended community then took advantage of our Open Day to explore Kennedy Baptist College’s growth and meet our current staff and students, who continue to carry the torch.
