STEM in Motion – 2025 H2GP WA Finals and STEM Activation Fair

On Friday 6 June, a group of Kennedy Year 9 students were invited to a STEM Activation Fair held at Murdoch University. The day included hydrogen car displays, hands-on activities and opportunities to view the Horizon Hydrogen Grand Prix (H2GP) and cheer on the teams competing in the WA Finals. The Hydrogen Grand Prix is a global program that challenges students to design, build and race hydrogen-powered vehicles – an initiative that aligns closely with Kennedy’s emphasis on innovation and sustainability in education.

Sponsored by Chevron in collaboration with Australian Earth Science Education, the event was a fantastic opportunity for our students to engage with cutting-edge technology in a real-world context.

A breakout space was filled with numerous hands-on exhibitions promoting Hydrogen as an energy source. The STEM activities were facilitated by volunteers from Murdoch University and included a virtual reality tour of a Hydrogen refueling plant, small group discussions with engineers from Chevron, a Science and Technologies interactive quiz and a walk through of Murdoch’s mechatronics and instrumentation laboratories.

Students from 21 schools gathered for the official opening and closing ceremonies of the H2GP Finals and had the chance to watch the full race unfold inside the university’s gymnasium.  The response from our students was all positive, finding the day of activities valuable and fun! Some even expressed a keen interest in the H2GP competition in the future.

Mr Adam Handley, Head of Technologies, noted how exciting it was to witness the race firsthand and shared his hope that Kennedy students won’t be just spectators next year, but competitors. With the ultimate prize being an invitation to the World Finals in Germany, the potential is both thrilling and inspiring. At Kennedy Baptist College, we are committed to nurturing curiosity and equipping students with the skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. From excursions and strong university partnerships alike, we are proud to offer meaningful, future-focused learning experiences that go beyond the classroom.

We look forward to more opportunities for Kennedy students to engage in innovative excursions and experiences, and maybe even a chance to one day race in the H2GP!
